IN  MEMORY  OF BLAZE BERNSTEIN

๐ŸŒฟ ๐ŸŒป ๐ŸŒฑ ๐ŸŒท ๐ŸŒฟ

The SPECTRUM Art Walk on September 14 honored the life of Blaze Bernstein, the 19-year-old victim of a 2018 Orange County hate crime. Blaze was gay and Jewish, and the grandson of a Holocaust survivor.

Those who knew him best describe Blaze as a modern-day renaissance man. After attending Orange County School of the Arts, Bernstein went to the University of Pennsylvania, where he threw himself into biochemistry, psychology, poetry, community activism, and food writing.

In January 2018, investigators found Blaze's body near Borrego Park in Orange County. Officials determined he had been stabbed and killed in an act of rage. That year saw a surge in anti-Semitic hate crimes against members of the LGBTQ+ community. On Saturday, September 14, we honor Blaze and the LGBTQ+ Community as a whole, to celebrate those who fight to live as their authentic selves.

The Bernstein family are much loved Mar Vista neighbors and huge supporters of the local arts. The Bernstein family's โ€œBlaze it Forwardโ€ Facebook Page has become a refuge of sorts for people who seek acts of kindness and those who want to perform such acts. At our SPECTRUM Art Walk, there were several activities honoring Blaze's memory. His grandfather's personal collection of work by Mar Vista artists was displayed at the Disability Community Resource Center at 12901 Venice Blvd. Some of the other highlights of the night including a memorial for Blaze, a baking contest and herb garden to celebrate his love for culinary arts, and a drag show promoting awareness and excitement for the LBGTQ community.

Here are the highlights of the night! We hope you had a great time.
