May Featured Artist - Jessica Eve of Mystic Arts Co and DYE in LA
Jessica Eve is a performance artist, fire dancer, henna painter, and clothing designer in West LA. Jessica runs a boutique event company called Mystic Arts Co. which she uses as a platform to showcase multimedia and performance artists. Due to the current shelter in place ordinances, Jessica has put her event business on the back burner and is focusing on new artistic and business ventures, including a bespoke clothing line called DYE in LA. We asked Jessica a few questions to learn more about the many creative hats she wears and how she stays inspired.
What are five words to describe you/your work?
Intimate, Intricate, Experimental , Entertaining, and Magical.
What is your creative process like?
Connection and inspiration are two vital elements of my process. Everything else varies… I’m always excited by something new, my canvas is always different whether it be a person I am drawing on, an event I am performing at, or clothing which is my latest creative venture. My work is mostly inspired by human connection. How can I inspire other people by my work? I also find a lot of inspiration from ancient artforms, patterns in nature, and symmetry.
What drives you to make art?
Art is how I express myself. It’s my main form of communication. I’m also driven the fact that its how I support myself. As a full-time artist, I have no other choice. I don’t see getting a normal 9-5 as something I am interested in so I create to continue to live as an artist. It’s also in my blood. My family lineage is full of artists!
How do you stay inspired?
Walks in nature, dancing, connecting with other artists, silence, and exploring other cultures.
What message do you want to send through your business or art?
I want people to know that you can do and be anything. The only limitations are those you set for yourself, You can create anything you want for yourself. I became a freakin' fire dancer. The only thing that's in your way is you.
What difficult experiences have you faced professionally/creatively?
Recently, because of the virus, I had to completely change what I've been doing professionally and creatively. My art was all event-based and now that there are no events- I’ve been working on a custom clothing line, which has been so much fun and is getting really positive feedback.
What has been your experience with Mar Vista Music & Art Wslk? How do you feel connected to it?
I’ve lived on Venice Blvd for a year now and it’s really cool to see so many artists come together and share their craft. Whether its music, paintings, or handmade goods it’s so incredible to see SO many people out there doing sharing there heart and their art.
Do you have any upcoming projects, events or shows? (So we can let the people know!)
Well, as a matter of fact, I do! Born from the Stay at Home order, DYE IN LA is a clothing line my partner and I started as a way to stay creative and make some money on the side while our other jobs are limited. We hand dye clothing to create one of a kind pieces of art. I’m really excited about it. You can check it out on Instagram @DYEINLA or www.dyeinla.com
