November Featured Artist II - Michael Rollins

VeniceMarV-7.jpg

Our second featured artist this month is Michael Rollins. Rollins creates abstract environments for people to explore. He’s interested in buildups and breakdowns, the interaction between disparate elements, and the chaotic disruption that is present in these narratives. Most of the installations and sculptural works revolve around animated loops made by hand in the studio. These loops are made by putting individual photographs into a video sequence. The photographs document an array of handmade and augmented objects and materials. Rollins create these objects in wood, resin, plaster, acrylic medium, acrylic glass, aluminum, silicone, paint, repurposed objects, led lights, and other found materials.

Who are you and what do you do?

I am a visual artist who creates drawings, paintings, sculptures, installations, and videos.

What is your creative process?

IMG_5357.jpg

I try to keep my creative process as inclusive as possible. The most important thing for me is to be disciplined and make time to be in the studio.

What drives you to make art?

Giving people an interruption from their routine experiences is what drives me to create art. I am also just driven by the incessant need to make things.

How do you stay inspired?

Experimenting with different content and media keeps me inspired and excited to make art in various forms. Engaging with people is what inspires me to share the work on a large scale.

Do you have any upcoming projects, events or shows?

I hope to be allowed to continue to share my ideas on a public scale, like the collaboration with Mar Vista Music & Art Walk. I am excited to be collaborating on some projects with other artists and musicians in the coming months.

What do you hope visitors will experience in your installations at Mar Vista Music & Art Walk?

I hope visitors will experience a momentary break in their reality when they are immersed in the installations. Hopefully that experience makes them engage their world with more curiosity.
